Did you know?: I am stealing an hour out of a very busy day to put this piece together. 🙂
One of the most vital skills you can have in life is the ability to set goals; and one of the best discipline you should develop is the ability to always achieve goals you have set.
Brian Tracy was right when he said that “You feel truly happy only when you are making progress step-by-step toward something that is important to you.”
If you are stuck on a spot doing the same thing, you will never be happy with your life. But when you see yourself making progress, you will be happy with yourself and life in general.
However, you can’t make progress:
- If you don’t know what you want and
- If you do not work towards achieving it daily.
And today, I want to share with you a simple 7 step system that I use to set and achieve goals. I would like you to go through each step one by one and use it to set and achieve your desired goals.
7 Steps to Achieve your Goals
Step 1: Decide exactly what you want
The first step to achieving your goals is setting it. It is important to know what you want and why you want it. Sometimes what we really want is not what we need.
Take for example if your goal is to lose weight, you should ask yourself why do you want to lose weight? Is it to look more attractive or for health reasons etc. Whatever be the reason, identify the goal and the motive behind the goal.
Finally to decide exactly what you want, also determine how you will feel, and the difference it will make in your life right now when that goal becomes a reality.
Make sure that you write it down.
Step 2: Set a Deadline
A goal without a deadline is just a dream – Robert Herjavec
Set a deadline when you will accomplish your goal.
However, be very rational when setting deadlines. Don’t set a deadline to short and don’t set it too far. When setting a deadline for your goals, consider your resources and where you are right now and based on that, set a deadline that fits the goal.
Step 3: Make your Plans
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
Make effective plans to achieve your goals. By taking an in-depth look at your resources, energy and time. Consider the obstacles, cost
and challenges you will likely face.
Now make a list of all the things you can literally to achieve your goals. Identify the pros and cons of each and figure out which of them you feel most comfortable with.
Step 4: Organize your resources
After knowing all what it will take to make your goal happen, it is important to organize your list by resources and order them in the right order.
Know which is most important and which leads to the other. Finally, don’t try to do all at once, but take it one step at time.
Step 5: Create a Goal Statement
Your goal setting exercise is not complete if you don’t write it down. Write down your goal and the deadline. Also provide an in-depth detail of what you will do to achieve your goal by developing a goal statement.
Here is an example below:
I am going to make $5000 by the 30th of August 2060, I intend to make the money by providing cleaning services in my neighborhood. I must clean a total of 50 houses at $100 each to make the money.
Read your goal statement aloud to yourself every morning when you wake up and every night just before going to bed.
It is a good thing to keep thinking about it before going to sleep.
Step 6: Take the First Few Step
The Journey of a thousand miles begins with a step.
The journey to achieving your goals does not begin in setting the goal and making plan to achieve them, instead the most important thing you need to do is to taking the step to making your goal a reality.
Sometimes, it can feel intimidating, but you just have to take that first few steps. Start working on your goals, whether you feel like it or not. That is the true test of discipline.
Be courageous enough to take the first step.
Step 7: Don’t stop until you get there
Be Consistently Consistent.
While you need to be courageous enough to take the first step, you must be disciplined enough to be consistent in taking action daily towards your goal.
Be committed to winning not just trying. Avoid any negative thing that will cause you to lose faith in yourself and surround yourself with the right motivation to keep you on the right track.
Remember that your progress in life is dependent on your ability to set goals and finding the discipline to achieve your set goals is most important. So here is a quick recap on the seven steps:
Decide exactly what you want
Set a Deadline
Organize your resources
Create a Goal Statement
Take the First Few Step
Don’t stop until you get there
So, what are you waiting for? Go and make your goals a reality.
